Jesse did the illustrations for a DVD entitled “A Native American Night
Before Christmas” which was nominated for the Best Animated film for 2006 by the
American Indian Film Institute. Originally formatted for a book, the DVD is
distributed by VisionMaker Video, a division of Native American Public
(877-868-2250). The book will be published by Clearlight Books of Santa Fe for the 2007
holiday season.

Jesse was the Featured Artist for the 2006 Pueblo Grande Indian Market this December in Phoenix. In 2005, Judges gave a special award for one of Jesse's "ledger" pieces at the Market.

Won the Best in Easel Art at the 2006 Tesoro Foundation Indian Market and Pow Wow. The acrylic painting on canvas was entitled "The Name is in the Song."

Jesse was selected as one of the American Indian artists whose work will hang in the American Embassy in Cambodia. The new ambassador Joseph Mussomeli selected three of Jesse's acrylic pieces for exhibiting in the public spaces of his residence: "Hummingbird Matron", "For All the Marbles" and "We Are Bird Clan." Arrangements were made through the Art in Embassies program. The art will be on loan to the ambassador for two years.

Jesse Hummingbird Contact The Artist
Cherokee

Jesse T. Hummingbird, 3/4 Cherokee and a tribal member of the Cherokee Nation, was born in 1952 in Tahlequah, OK. He attended junior and senior high schools in Nashville, TN, and went on to study art at Watkins Institute, the University of Tennessee, and classes at The American Academy of Art in Chicago.

He established himself as a successful printer, graphic artist, and commercial illustrator before becoming a full time artist in 1983. Jesse pursues both Cherokee and other American Indian themes in his acrylic paintings as what he calls "intertribal fantasy." While painting contemporary images, Jesse paints in the traditional style of the Oklahoma Native painters which has no shadows, shading or blending of colors; each flat-colored area has an in-lining of a different color and then a dark outline.

Jesse currently exhibits at approximately 20 shows during the year, primarily in the southwest. Besides showing his original paintings and mixed media masks, he has limited edition prints and giclee reproductions. Jesse and his wife Sandy have also published four children's activity books. Jesse currently serves on the artist advisory boards for the Sharlot Hall Museum (Prescott) and Pueblo Grande Museum Indian Market (Phoenix).
